How to play
Flag Master is a site for learning the flags, names, and locations of the world’s 195 countries with quizzes. Everything works without signing up.
Getting started
- Select the big Play the quiz card at the top of the home screen. You can also play the Daily Puzzle and the Adventure from the big cards below it.
- On the Choose a mode screen, pick the question type, answer style, regions, and number of questions.
- Select Start to begin the quiz. Choose one of the four answers (in Tap the map, you tap on the map instead).
The row of small icons below the cards has Leaderboard, Badges, Gallery, Profile, and Settings. In Settings on the home screen, you can change the sound, color theme, text size, colorblind-friendly colors (right answers turn blue and wrong answers turn orange), “Go straight to the next question after a right answer,” and more.
Five question types
Questions combine flags, country names, and locations.
- Flag → Name: See a flag and choose the country’s name.
- Name → Flag: See a country’s name and choose its flag.
- Location → Flag: See a location marked on the map and choose that country’s flag.
- Flag → Location: See a flag and choose where that country is on the map.
- Tap the map: See a flag and tap where that country is on a blank map with no answer choices. You can zoom in and out and drag to move the map. It’s available only in Practice and Challenge (not in Time Attack).
In the three types that use locations, turn on “Also show the country name (hint)” to see the country’s name too.
Practice, Challenge, and Time Attack
Choose one of these under Answer style.
- Practice: Questions you miss come back later. It ends when you get them all right.
- Challenge: One mistake sends you back to the start. Aim for a perfect run.
- Time Attack: One mistake and you’re out. Clear it, and you can take on the Leaderboard with your time.
The countries you miss are recorded, and you can review them together when the quiz ends. You can clear this record with Clear mistake history in Settings on the home screen.
Daily Puzzle
The Daily Puzzle is a set of 20 questions you can play only once a day. A new puzzle starts every day at midnight Japan time. Everyone who plays that day, anywhere in the world, gets the same questions and shares the same leaderboard.
As in Time Attack, one mistake ends the run. Get them all right to get a time, and you can post it to that day’s leaderboard. If you close the page partway, you can’t try again.
Adventure
Get answers right in the quiz to earn coins, which you can use in the Adventure. Draw flags with the Flag Draw to recruit country allies, build a team, and make your way through the dungeons.
Play the Adventure from the Adventure card on the home screen. If you don’t want to see it, you can turn it off in Settings.
Look-alike Flags Dojo
On the Choose a mode screen, select Look-alike Flags Dojo →. Pick a group of look-alike flags to get questions on just those countries. Any you miss come back later.
Gallery
Select Gallery on the home screen to see the flags of all 195 countries as a list or on a map. Select a country to see its capital, region, area, and fun facts.
The quiz never asks for capitals. You can see them in the explanation after each answer and in the Gallery.
Badges
Do certain things in the quiz, the Daily Puzzle, and the Adventure to earn badges. Each badge also gives you a title. Some are “secret badges” that don’t tell you how to get them.
Profile and moving to a new device
Select Profile on the home screen and choose a nickname to create a profile. Your nickname then appears on the Time Attack, Daily Puzzle, and Adventure leaderboards. Please don’t use your real name or the name of your school (see Rules for names).
To keep playing on another device, get a Transfer code under Move to a new device on the profile screen, then enter that code on the new device. A code works only once and expires after 24 hours.
Add to home screen
If your browser supports it, select Add to home screen in Settings. Once added, it opens instantly like an app and works even offline. On an iPhone, tap the Share button in Safari (the square with an up arrow), then choose “Add to Home Screen.”
Put it on your blog or website
You can put “Today’s flag,” a one-question-a-day flag quiz, on your own blog or website. Copy the code below and paste it in.
<iframe src="https://chikokunn1011.github.io/country-drill/en/embed.html" title="Today’s flag (Flag Master)" width="100%" height="460" style="max-width:400px;border:0" loading="lazy"></iframe>
The colors start out light. For dark colors, change embed.html to embed.html?theme=dark. To match the viewer’s device, change it to embed.html?theme=auto.
Each question either shows a flag and asks for the country’s name, or shows a country’s name and asks for its flag. There are no questions about capitals. The question changes every day (at midnight Japan time).
